Few words, for few people...

Always standing behind the PBKS team in every thick and thin, encouraging them with a pure smile - Preeti Zinta, just take a bow lady!

Everything seemed over. The opponents started celebrating, crying. Team mates had no motivation to encourage. But one player stood alone, hit the boundary after the boundary, made 22 runs against the 29 needed in the last over. What a grit, what a player - Shashank Singh walked away in tears after the match, but did everything right to feel proud of himself.

Last season's winning captain was surprisingly let go by his franchise, and in the immediate next season, he led his new team to finals from a different franchise that bestowed confidence in him, he stood tall in major wins of the season for his team - Shreyas Iyer, something is very special about this player, the name to watch out more for. Kudos captain!

One of the best players the sport has produced, emotional and brilliant personality who needs no introduction, winning the 1st IPL title in the 18th attempt - Virat Kohli, the player who has been scripting history. Hearty congratulations champion!

Famous people - ParenthoodDiaries #92

One day Bharat and Bhuvan came to me, after learning the meaning of the word 'famous'.

"Amma, we want to see who are famous people, show them on your phone"

I said - "Ok, i will show, but tell me what Amma is famous for.."

One of them said, "Umm...Amma is famous for cooking, playing with us and going to the office".

I then opened google and kids said over voice "famous musicians"... We started seeing the photos of famous people.

Then ..

"famous dancers"...

"famous doctors "...

"famous basketball players"...

"famous tennis players"...

"famous football players"...

Then came the turn of cricket. What kids said surprised me to the core!

They said... "Famous Virat Kohli"...

How deeply some players leave their mark on the sport they play! Amazing and inspiring.

I always tell kids that the sport is bigger than any player, I mean I tell them in a simple language that 7 year olds can understand. But they hear a lot from their friends in school and housing society that it's difficult to keep them away from idolizing any person. I will continue to try though.

June 1st - The global day of parents

During the COVID-19 lockdown, I read a real-life story about a single-mother of eight children, cooking stones in an utensil to make her hungry children believe that the food would be served soon. She thought that the children would eventually sleep while waiting for the food.

It's so heart wrenching even now, when I think about it after many years, that how helpless the mother would have felt when she couldn't feed her children. And the extent that she went to manage her hungry children. This is her story.

Likewise, every parent has a story, which is unique and should never be compared with any other's.

I wonder and admire all that the parents go through while raising the children, or should I say, what not that they go through!

Sometimes children realize what parents do for them, many times they would never know! All that children can do is, to give back. Love. Warmth. Time. Friendship. Care. Whatever and whichever that can be given back!

Some of us are parents but everyone of us is a child, who owes a lot to our parents. Towards our parents, we are responsible more than what we think we are; for them, we are bound to do more than what we do.

Work is at its place; it needs to be at its place. We must keep giving our parents the beautiful moments, that they deserve and we owe.

Systems Engineering and Motherhood - It's as if they probe each other within me to bring interesting realizations into my notice.

Many years ago I worked for developing car's Body Control Module - the ECU that's famously known for always dealing with more than what it is supposed to!

I remember the days when I and my team members used to debate amongst us, further heavily with the suppliers, about what all ways the paper based label that's pasted on BCM's housing could get destroyed.

What if someone splashes hot tea at it?

What if the ECU's temperature rises suddenly and how it shall still stick to the ECU's housing?

.

What if someone does this, and that, and what not?

After many years, one day during our road-trip, one of my kids casually bent under the dashboard, removed the label from our car's BCM (the same one that I worked for, by the way) and he then stick it in my palm. This was never a use case in our debates back then!

Once the label was removed, I could never place it back as perfectly as I thought we had made it to be!

Summer holidays are the best part of childhood. Our boys are having a blast these days. One of them is particularly after the Rubik's Cube. It's great to see their appetite to do new things!!

 English is fun at times.

We were trying to teach English to Bharat & Bhuvan. In that process, my husband asked them one day - "What is your mother tongue?"

One of them replied - "My mother tongue is in my mother's mouth"

Later, when we explained them what mother tongue is, they asked - "ok, then what is father tongue?"

What would I say, well, I said - "Only mother tongue is considered, there is nothing like father tongue"

They were like - "Why only girls have tongue on their name, why not boys?"

Now this adds to their growing list of such questions, another one has been - "Why only girls can deliver small babies, why not boys

?".

I'm realizing that we cannot keep gender away really, though we don't want kids to feel any gender differentiation.

 I visited the Olympic Museum in Switzerland, a few months ago. There was a little souvenir that caught my attention with the following written on it - "The struggle is noble".

Although the quote was intended for the Olympians, I could pretty much relate to it in no time.

At times, we strongly want certain things to happen to us. However, we also feel nervous about them happening, since they come with humongous responsibilities. The nervousness kicks in deeper, when we realize the hard fact that there would be a lot of circumstantial support needed, with a lot of struggle en route.

What helps us to fight out the nervousness is our ability to internalize the noble outcome of the struggle; our strong belief that "It's worth it". Once we internalize it, we are ready for the face-off. Come what may, we find out the ways to execute our responsibilities, one at a time or all at once!

 Systems engineering is continuing to deepen within me, courtesy my motherhood journey.

Every single time I'm vague in telling things to my kids or when I just go with implicit understanding, they ask me to specify.

"Amma, do you need us to get 5 things or 6 things?"

"Do you want us to come back home within 30 minutes or 45 minutes?"

"No, it's not black colour, it's a grey shade"

"It's not 10'o clock, it's 10 hours 10 minutes"

"Why didn't you say you meant 'Eyes'' and not 'Ice'?"

"Why didn't you say that the wall-clock would break if I hit a sixer?"

"What do you mean the sunrise happened, is the sun at 15 degrees or 30 degrees now?"

As the kids grow, the depth of their questions is growing! I'm certain of a great difficulty, but a beautiful ride ahead.

I wonder how closely merged 'life' and 'work' are, and how easy it is to hit the balance if we get habitual to look at them in the right perspective, if not always but a majority of times!

School with only 6 students! - ParenthoodDiaries #87

There was a banner tied in front of a school, showing the photos and names of the top scorers.

We stopped our car next to that banner, due to traffic.

I was hearing my kids reading the names of students written on the banner. After reading all the six names mentioned on it, one kid told the other - "See, this school has only 6 students, aiyyoo..very few students!!".

It never occurred to me this way because my mind had been trained to see the top rankers being felicitated all the time. But my kids never faced a question from either me or anyone from our family (yet) asking - " Who came first in class?", "How many marks your friend has scored", bla bla.

I'm glad they haven't yet experienced the competitive side of the education, but are undergoing constant learning and enjoying their early schooling period.

It was fun doing the sand art with kids this weekend. Their enthusiasm and energy made me recall a few memorable moments spent in childhood with my cousins doing the similar art.

Thanks to the thoughtful toy making companies for bringing up beautiful engagement activities for kids. Much needed in the digital 'Gen Z' era!

Market day and Mysuru palace - ParenthoodDiaries #85

My kids have learnt that money can be earned by doing work.

Recently they participated in "Market Day" in their school, where they sold fruit salad.

Later when we visited Mysuru Palace, I asked them if they would buy me a house like the Palace.

They said - "yes, we will buy it for you. We already have some money from the market day in school. And we will do many such market days. We will buy the palace when we grow".

Recently Bharat & Bhuvan participated in their school's sports day..one funny incident followed..

I was untying the knot of Pajama for kids, and I was struggling as it was very tight...

One of the kids said - "Amma, yes, you can do it, come on"..!!

He said that he had heard it while someone encouraged their team to win during the sports day.

Where and how kids apply their learnings is unpredictable! And sports bring in phenomenal learnings about winning, losing, participating and most importantly encouraging.

Happy Republic Day - 2025!

A beautiful republic day morning spent at the celebrations of my kids' school. All the performances were superb. Thanks to the efforts of teaching and non-teaching staff. The playground glittering in the light of sunrise was another beauty to witness.

The best part of the celebration was to watch my kids give their republic day speeches. Such shy boys otherwise, when they come behind the mic they display the Gene of their grandparents!

Spaceship and the moon - ParenthoodDiaries #82

Our recent visit to Sriharikota SHAR space center is giving us lovely artifacts shown below.

We are sending India to space every now and then on paper, with our two little launchpads at home! One day I asked the kids - "Would you like to travel to space in a spaceship?".

After both of them said "yes", one of them asked back - "Will you be there in the spaceship too?"

Did you ever experience 'weightlessness' in a car?

I didn't either. But I witnessed our boys almost experiencing it when they hang in up side down to the car's roof, which made me recall the pictures astronauts share from space ships.

Have you ever experienced this as a mother?

When I'm stressed out I yell at kids. I tell them later, though more to myself, that I yell out of love and that I can be myself only in front of them!

But when they yell at me, I take time to convince myself with the same logic.

Only after I became a mother, I realized why my mother at me, and my grandmother at my mother, used to yell sometimes, which felt completely illogical in those moments. But now I understand, much better, why those moments of expression were to happen.

Humanity is blessed to have mothers. The abundant love is just unbeatable.

Countless memories!

This is how I sum up our recent road trip with our twin boys in our Tata Tiago.

Pune - Chikballapur - Coorg - Mysuru - Coimbatore - Pune

My kids have made me draw the following after the trip, I'm glad we are able to show them new places often. Their excitement about different sweets that they get to taste in different places, is the best part of our road-trips.

Different cultures from different places have their own significance and history. Happy to learn and live through them during the trips.

The pigeon moments!

We have been witnessing a few "pigeon-moments" on our terrace. Now, the second generation is going on, again with twin eggs.

The mother pigeon first builds the bed-nest for its eggs. It doesn't move, even a bit, unless to fetch some food for itself or its baby birds. It stays with the baby-birds for their protection when they can't fly. It vanishes once the babies learn to fly. And the cycle continues.

Amazing display of the fundamental survival skills. Never minding about the per-week-work-hours!

Moment that made my year - ParenthoodDiaries #79

Some moments make our days, but this moment made my year.

One of our boys got the highest attendance award in their annual day function. It was a pleasant surprise for us.

As I reflect on it, I realize that the highest attendance signifies discipline, which is an important factor in our lives. Glad to see my kids adapting to it at a young age. A lot of credit would also go to their Silpa Aunty, who's equally disciplined at her work being their care giver. Thanks to our kids' school teachers for guiding kids through the right direction.

While I was clapping for one of our twin boys, I was naturally thinking about the other one, as to what he would say, and if he would cry that he didn't get a trophy for himself.

On the contrary to my worry, the other one happily said the following - "Amma, he has got the award for all 'P's (Presents) and I had few 'A's (Absents). And next year, I will be getting the award as I will be attending school even if I get a fever, cold or cough".

I wondered about his sportive spirit and practical thinking about how to get the award next time, which is nothing less than an award.
